We took Linley to Children's Hospital on Friday morning to have a dermoid cyst removed from behind her left ear. We first noticed the BB-sized bump when she was an infant. It slowly grew to the size of a pea by the time she was two. A CT scan indicated a benign growth that would only continue to grow. We were less than enthusiastic about sedating her, but decided to go ahead with the surgery anyway.
After surgery, the neurosurgeon informed us that the growth had burrowed 2/3 of the way into her skull on a diagonal between two growth plates. However, it also could have started out there and grown out over the course of two years. The surgery went very well, though Linley reacted adversely to the anesthesia post-op. So, instead of going home after 3-4 hours, we stayed for 8. Amazingly, she perked up as soon as we got in the car.
Once we got home, she was starving (though the nurse told us to give her only liquids for the rest of the day). Once her tummy was full of Goldfish, Kashi cereal bars, and a juice box, she started jumping on her trampoline! I imagine that was contraindicated after surgery, too! However, she kept everything down and continued to return to her normal self. Her incision is much bigger than we anticipated, but it is healing beautifully.
